I was stationed on the Zaandam when it was journeying from San Diego to Hawaii and back, and back, and back. The Zaandam is an R-class ship.

Tatra Mountains in Winter

In winter the Tatras can only be entered by means of the cable car. But when you're on top on a sunny day, you won't want to leave! There's magic in the Tatras all the year round but in winter these mountains display a pristine beauty that you'll hardly dare to breathe.

Zakopane in Winter

Winters tend to get a bit monstrous in Zakopane, Poland. For months we shove snow and build snowmen and enjoy the glorious scenery (when it isn't snowing!). Also see under the tab "Tatra Mountains in Winter"

Skagway

The tiny town of Skagway lies at the end of a natural waterway, and is surrounded by spectacular mountains. The town itself features fun from an ancient brothel to a public local museum, and its grid of streets invite for a walk along the residencies. Just outside the town is the wilderness, going all the way to Canada: icy lakes, steep precipices, gaping gores, carnivorous predators; it's all there.

Tracy Arm

Usually, when we approach Juneau, and there is time, the Captain takes the ship into Tracy Arm. What you see there defies description. You expect trolls and wizards to jump at you from the mist, and you can't be else than sure that there are unicorns and dragons romping about these hills.

Zakopane, Poland

In the lap of the Tatra Mountains lies a village that's called Burried, because that's what Zakopane means. It was 'discovered' not too long ago, and all that time people tended their sheep and played violin. At present Zakopane is a wonderful tourist haunt, with lots of noisy things to do, but, thank God, also oceans of peace and quiet. See the tab "Tatra Mountains" for an impression of the area immediately south of Zakopane.

Krakow, Poland

If you enjoy great architecture, go to Krakow, Poland. Krakow boasts the largest square in Europe, and it sure is among the prettiest I've ever seen. And its most remarkable quality is that it is so very quiet there. There's hardly any talking, and certainly no radios blaring or juveniles tearing around on scooters and the likes. For old farts like me, Krakow is as close to heaven as it gets.

Ketchikan is a lovely Alaskan town along the Inside Passage. These photos were taken from the upper deck of a Holland America Line cruise ship. I seem to remember it was the Oosterdam, but now that I look at the pictures it might as well been the Veendam.

Mount Roberts, Juneau Alaska

The town of Juneau, Alaska is hemmed in by Castelnau Channel on the south-west side and Mount Roberts on the north-east. A cable tram leads to half way up the mountain, to just below the tree line. Walking further up brings you to Father Brown's Cross, and a ragged dreamscape towards the summit.
